Top 5 Cars For Rideshare Drivers

What Makes for a Good Rideshare Vehicle?

Published March 12, 2019

Drivers of Uber, Lyft and other rideshare companies must make an important decision — which vehicle to choose for their business.

If you are a new rideshare driver, you must consider selecting a reliable model, as you’re going to be using the car regularly (and as your business), and you will never make any money if your vehicle breaks down frequently or consistently has trouble. Particularly because most rideshare companies allow riders to rate and review their experience with their drivers, you want to be able to provide optimal, comfortable and seamless transportation to your customers.

In addition to the model of your vehicle, you should also consider the aspect of fuel economy and comfortability. When driving all day every day, gas costs can really start to add up. You should select a fuel-efficient vehicle to help reduce this cost. Your passengers expect to enjoy a comfortable ride and the rear seats should be spacious. Passengers are more likely to leave a five-star rating if they have a hassle-free, pleasant ride.
By studying reliability scores, EPA gas mileage estimates, rear-seat dimensions, and best cars scoring data, you can decide which models will be successful as a rideshare vehicle. Five of the cars best suited as rideshare vehicles are listed below.

1. Honda Civic

The Honda Civic is world-renowned for being a very efficient and reliable car. It is affordable to run, with a combined mileage of 33 mpg. Some setups even have a higher rating at 44 mpg in the city and 47 mpg on the highway. Additionally, its brakes are efficient and the steering is sharp and responsive. The vehicle structure itself is strong and looks sporty. This affordable car is a pleasure to drive and stands to provide your passengers with comfortability while helping you save money at the pump.

2. Ford Fusion

The Ford Fusion, a family sedan, is a very popular car among rideshare drivers. Its handling is precise and it has a stylish look, as well as comfortable front and back seats. It is available with a wide range of engines (e.g. with an EcoBoost four-cylinder, as a hybrid, and as an Energi model). You should note that its standard fuel rating is 24 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway, but the hybrid model is more fuel-efficient and can get you between 42 and 50 mpg. This model offers you and your passengers a sleek and spacious ride.

3. Toyota Camry

The Toyota Camry is a spacious, quiet car that gives comfortable rides and is sure to get high ratings from passengers. It is one of the best midsize sedans and has an aesthetically pleasing exterior.

The Camry’s reliability is rated much higher than average. It has topped Highway Safety crash tests and even the non-hybrid version is highly fuel-efficient. However, its rear seats are slightly smaller than other, similar cars and this is something to consider in terms of passenger comfortability.

Models with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine generate good power and yield about 32 mpg. You can also opt for a 3.5-liter V6 engine. Both of these are paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The most fuel-efficient model is the hybrid LE that gives you 47 mpg and has the Entune infotainment system and Apple CarPlay support in 2019 models. It scores good points on safety too, with forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking, and optional blind spot warning.

4. Hyundai Sonata

If you are looking for an inexpensive car that feels luxurious, the Hyundai Sonata is an apt choice. At the same time, it offers good value and competes well with other sedans. A powerful model of this car has a 2.0-liter supercharged four-cylinder engine. Also available is a more fuel-efficient 1.6-liter four-cylinder turbo engine. The Hyundai Sonata is expected to get you a mileage of 28 mpg in the city and 38 mpg on the highway.

5. Toyota Corolla

For rideshare drivers, the Toyota Corolla is an excellent choice as it has very low maintenance costs. Its fuel economy is impressive and it also has good resale value. Newer versions of this car are highly recommended for Uber and other rideshare drivers as these provide ample room for passengers. Also, the Corolla is a practical vehicle requiring low maintenance costs.

The most fuel-efficient non-hybrid version is the ‘LE Eco’ that gives 35 mpg combined mileage. The other models get 32 mpg combined. The hybrid version will go up to 42 mpg combined. Rated as one of the least expensive cars on the Forbes list, the Toyota Corolla is a reliable, efficient, and comfortable car, though it may not compete in looks or style with other similar cars in this category.
